The Woman Who Fed the Swans: Tonbridge Castle's Unsolved Drowning of 1855
Day 7 of our Halloween countdown of real West Kent dark history: in September 1855, Jane Wolley went for her usual walk beside the River Medway at Tonbridge Castle to feed the swans - and never came back. An inquest called it a tragic accident, but the family she left behind went on to a London mansion fire, an insurance fraud trial, and a sister who stayed at her widower's side for the rest of her life. The castle is open to the public today, Halloween trail included.
