Saturday brought league action for West Kent clubs across two divisions, with Tonbridge Angels forced to settle for a point at home in the National League South, while Sevenoaks Town FC delivered a clinical attacking performance in the Isthmian League South East.
Tonbridge Angels 2–2 Dorking Wanderers
National League South | Yeomans Community Stadium | Saturday 3 January
Tonbridge Angels were left frustrated after a dominant performance ended in a 2–2 draw against promotion contenders Dorking Wanderers on a bitterly cold afternoon.
Despite controlling much of the match, the Angels fell behind early when Patrick Casey scored from close range on 11 minutes. Tonbridge responded positively and were rewarded shortly before half-time when Bailey Akehurst converted a 44th-minute penalty, following a foul on Frankie Baker in the area.
The home side continued to press after the break but were caught out on 68 minutes when James McShane bundled the ball home after an effort was initially cleared from the line. Tonbridge responded swiftly, levelling the score five minutes later when a corner caused chaos in the six-yard box and Tom Leahy reacted quickest to fire home on 73 minutes.
The Angels pushed hard for a late winner and appealed for a penalty deep into stoppage time, but the referee waved play on, leaving the home side to settle for a share of the points.
After the match, manager Alan Dunne said: “We have dominated the game… tactically we got it right, but if you don’t put the ball in the net you leave yourselves open.”
Sevenoaks Town 4–2 East Grinstead Town
Isthmian League South East | The Bourne Stadium | Saturday 3 January
Sevenoaks Town produced a powerful attacking display to secure a 4–2 home victory over East Grinstead Town at The Bourne Stadium.
The hosts made a blistering start, opening the scoring on 8 minutes through Warren-Hughes Mfula. Sevenoaks continued to dominate the first half and doubled their lead when Mfula struck again on 35 minutes, before extending the advantage further just four minutes later, with Hanson Itauma scoring on 39 minutes to put the home side firmly in control before the break.
East Grinstead responded immediately after half-time, pulling a goal back on 46 minutes through Daniel Thompson. Sevenoaks restored their three-goal cushion on 57 minutes when Jefferson Aibangbee found the net, effectively halting the visitors’ momentum.
The visitors reduced the deficit again on 68 minutes, with Ridwan Euba scoring to make it 4–2, but Sevenoaks managed the remainder of the match well, seeing out the closing stages to secure all three points in front of 191 supporters.
