Just off the A21 on London Road in Hildenborough, between Sevenoaks and Tonbridge, Teal Cafe has quietly built one of West Kent's bigger review counts - nearly 800 on Google - on home-cooked brunches, a proper afternoon tea, and the kind of parking (plus an on-site car wash) that's rare for a village cafe.
What's on the menu
Teal's all-day menu runs Monday to Friday 8am-2pm, Saturdays 8am-3pm and Sundays 9am-3pm, with separate vegetarian, vegan and gluten-aware sections. Brunch covers a Totally Teal and a Kentish breakfast, smashed avocado, omelettes, smoked salmon and scrambled egg, eggs Benedict or Royale, American pancakes, a breakfast burger and wrap, and homemade granola. Lunch adds wholetail scampi, baked ham, egg and chips, jacket potatoes and a southern fried chicken and feta salad, alongside a children's menu, sandwiches and toasties, and a burger list running from a double bacon cheeseburger to a halloumi or mushroom option for vegetarians. The cafe says it buys as much of its produce as it can from within Kent.
Afternoon tea, Teal-style
Beyond the all-day menu, Teal runs a full afternoon tea at £30 a head - scones with Cornish clotted cream and strawberry jam, sweet and savoury nibbles, traditional tea sandwiches and a choice of tea, with a bottle of prosecco added for £20. It needs booking at least 24 hours ahead for a minimum of two people, with a £10-a-head deposit, and is also sold as a takeaway in the cafe's own Teal Tea Caddies. A simpler Cream Tea - two scones, Roddas clotted cream, jam and bottomless tea - is £9.
What customers say
Teal's reviews are rated "Good" on Google, running at 4.4 out of 5 across 850 ratings. Visitor Paul W, stopping on the way to see family, called it "a fantastic breakfast, with great service and a reasonable price," adding that the owner "was very friendly and even sold us a couple of homemade cakes... absolutely scrumptious." Others echo the friendly service, generous portions and a bigger-than-expected interior. It's popular enough to get genuinely busy at weekends - one visitor, Vicky H, described a long wait for food on a Sunday lunch stop after a local craft fair, ending up with just coffees instead - so turning up outside peak times, or booking ahead for the afternoon tea, is worth it.
