West Kent's private and voluntary-sector nurseries offer around 12,700 childcare places between them - and on Ofsted's own figures, three of the four boroughs are outperforming the national average for Outstanding ratings.
The numbers, and what they don't cover
We analysed Ofsted's "Childcare providers and inspections" management information dataset, published 6 August 2026 and covering every provider registered as at 30 June 2026, filtering to active "childcare on non-domestic premises" settings with a postcode in one of the four boroughs. This covers private, voluntary and independent nurseries and pre-schools that register directly with Ofsted as childcare providers - it does not include childminders working from home, nursery classes that are part of a maintained primary school's own provision (these are exempt from registering separately, and are inspected as part of the school instead), or standalone maintained nursery schools, which Ofsted tracks under a different framework. So this is a comparison of the private and voluntary nursery sector specifically, not of all early years provision in West Kent.
| Borough | Nurseries | Places | Avg. size | Outstanding | Good or better |
| Tunbridge Wells | 86 | 3,560 | 41.4 | 22.0% | 100% |
| Sevenoaks | 70 | 2,487 | 35.5 | 19.5% | 100% |
| Maidstone | 82 | 3,547 | 43.3 | 16.7% | 98.1% |
| Tonbridge & Malling | 81 | 3,145 | 38.8 | 7.0% | 100% |
| England (national) | 27,990 | 1,154,109 | 41.2 | 14.8% | 99.4% |
Tunbridge Wells leads, Tonbridge & Malling lags
Tunbridge Wells has both the most private/voluntary nurseries (86) and the highest share rated Outstanding (22.0%) of any West Kent borough - well above the 14.8% national average. Sevenoaks (19.5%) and Maidstone (16.7%) also beat the national figure. Tonbridge & Malling is the outlier: just 7.0% of its inspected nurseries are rated Outstanding, less than half the national rate, though every single one still clears the "Good" bar - 100% Good or better, matching three of the other four boroughs.
A clean bill of health, mostly
Across all four boroughs combined, 178 of 179 inspected nurseries are rated Good or Outstanding (99.4%) - and not one is rated Inadequate. The single exception is in Maidstone, which has one nursery rated Requires Improvement. Roughly 44% of West Kent's private and voluntary nurseries haven't yet had a full inspection recorded in this dataset, typically because they're newly registered - Ofsted's ratings cover known inspection outcomes only, not every setting.
How West Kent compares to Kent as a whole
Kent county-wide has 822 active private/voluntary nurseries with 33,084 places between them - meaning West Kent's four boroughs, with 319 nurseries, account for just over a third of the county's registered private and voluntary nursery provision. Kent's overall Outstanding rate (15.6%) and Good-or-better rate (99.8%) both sit close to West Kent's own figures. Source:
