West Kent Football Round-up

Chelmsford City 1–0 Tonbridge Angels

National League South | Melbourne Stadium | Monday 26th January 2026 | Attendance: 1357
Tonbridge Angels were left to rue a single moment of quality as they slipped to a narrow 1–0 defeat away at Chelmsford City on Monday night.
Lyle Taylor’s stunning strike inside the opening 12 minutes proved decisive in a tight, at times scrappy encounter, despite a determined performance from Alan Dunne’s side that arguably merited a share of the points.
The Angels arrived in Essex looking to build on back-to-back victories against AFC Totton and Slough Town, although travel disruption at the Dartford Crossing delayed the journeys of many supporters making the trip.
Dunne made four changes to the starting line-up, handing starts to Scott Wagstaff, Bunmi Babajide, Ansu Janneh and Bailey Akehurst. However, a warm-up injury to skipper Wagstaff forced a late reshuffle, with Matty Warren coming into midfield and assuming the captain’s armband.
The opening exchanges offered little to excite before Chelmsford struck with a moment of real quality. Given space on the edge of the area, Taylor unleashed a thunderous effort that left Laurie Shala with no chance, underlining the pedigree of the former EFL forward.
Tonbridge responded positively and came agonisingly close to an equaliser five minutes later when Warren’s fierce strike from the edge of the box crashed back off the crossbar.
At the break, Dunne introduced Alfie Pavey and Ricky Korboa in place of Tom Leahy and Brad Williams, and the changes almost paid immediate dividends. A chaotic goalmouth scramble saw efforts from Babajide, Pavey and Janneh blocked in quick succession as the Chelmsford defence somehow survived.
The hosts remained a threat on the counter, but largely relied on their experience and organisation to see the game out, frustrating an Angels side that continued to probe without reward.
Speaking after the match, Dunne reflected on a contest decided by fine margins: “In this division, Chelmsford are one of the heavyweights and they had a bit more nous than us, were a bit more streetwise - everything that we are trying to get to. We’ve a light squad, missing three centre-halves, and two games in three days was not easy. I felt a draw would have been a fair result, but Lyle Taylor’s goal was that one moment of quality that decided it.”

Maidstone United 3–0 Ebbsfleet United

National League South | Gallagher Stadium | Tuesday 27th January 2026 | Attendance: 2085
Maidstone United produced a clinical first-half display to secure a convincing 3–0 victory over Ebbsfleet United at the Gallagher Stadium.
Despite Ebbsfleet looking the more threatening side in the opening stages, the Stones struck twice inside the first 21 minutes to seize control of the contest and never relinquished their grip.
The visitors made a positive start and went close early on when Kwesi Appiah got in behind the Maidstone defence, only for Nathan Harness to race from his goal and Taylor Foran to tidy up the danger. Moments later, Appiah again played a part as he teed up former Stone Charlie Seaman, whose low effort was well saved by Harness.
Maidstone took the lead on 13 minutes following a sharp move involving Deon Moore and Muhammadu Faal. Faal’s shot was parried by Matt Hall, but Jephte Tanga reacted quickest to guide the rebound home against his former club.
Eight minutes later, the hosts doubled their advantage with a superb direct goal. Harness launched a long kick downfield, Moore allowed the ball to bounce before coolly lifting it over Hall and into the net.
The Stones continued to look dangerous, with Riley Court and Moore both going close before the break, while Faal fired over after being picked out from the byline.
Ebbsfleet made a double substitution at half-time and the second half opened with chances at both ends. Hall produced an excellent save to deny Court’s curling effort, while Harness responded with a fine stop of his own to keep out a deflected Appiah strike from close range.
The visitors threatened intermittently, but Maidstone sealed the points on 69 minutes when Tanga’s cross caused confusion in the Fleet defence and Josh Passley inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.
Ebbsfleet had opportunities to reduce the deficit, with Dominic Samuel and Charlie Seaman both involved, but lacked the cutting edge required to change the outcome. At the other end, Faal continued to test Hall from distance before being withdrawn late on.
The result capped a solid all-round performance from Maidstone, who combined early efficiency with defensive assurance to claim a comfortable derby victory.
