Every year, Muddy Stilettos - the county-by-county lifestyle guide beloved of anyone trying to find somewhere decent to eat that isn't a chain - runs reader-voted awards across dozens of categories, from best restaurant down to best dog groomer. The 2026 Kent results are in, and West Kent did rather well for itself. Add in a fresh set of Michelin Guide entries for the county, and there's a genuinely good case for a long weekend of eating your way round Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells and Maidstone boroughs without crossing a county line.
The Small Holding, Kilndown - Best Restaurant, and a Michelin Green Star
The headline winner is out on Ranters Lane in Kilndown, a hamlet you'd otherwise drive straight through on the way to Cranbrook. The Small Holding took Best Restaurant in Kent at the Muddy Awards, and it already holds something rarer: a Michelin Green Star, the Guide's separate recognition for genuine sustainability rather than pure cooking technique. The pitch is farm-to-fork in the literal sense - a monthly-changing set menu built around whatever's hyper-seasonal and grown or reared close by, run by the team behind The Acre Group. It's not a big place and it's the kind of restaurant that rewards booking ahead rather than turning up on spec.
Number Eight, Sevenoaks - Casual Dining winner
In Sevenoaks, Number Eight picked up the Casual Dining award. It sits on London Road directly opposite the Stag theatre, run by chef and restaurateur Stuart Gillies alongside his wife Cecilia, serving a modern European and British menu that's built its reputation on consistency rather than fireworks - the kind of place regulars go back to specifically because it doesn't change much. Handy, too, if you're catching a show at the Stag and want dinner within a two-minute walk either side of it.
The Samuel Palmer, Shoreham - Most Loved Local Pub
Most Loved Local Pub went to The Samuel Palmer in Shoreham, on Church Street. The Grade II listed building has been serving drinkers for centuries under one name or another - most recently as Ye Olde George Inne, before reopening under its current name (shared with the vineyard next door, Mount Vineyard, under the same ownership) and taking on the name of the painter Samuel Palmer, who lived in the village and painted the surrounding valley in the 1820s. It's dog-friendly, has rooms if you want to make a night of it, and is a short walk from Shoreham station if you'd rather leave the car at home.
Kin Coffee, Staplehurst - Café winner
Over in Staplehurst, the Café award went to Kin Coffee - which started life as a coffee roastery before its owners opened an actual shop on the High Street a couple of years later. The roastery side still does the work: beans are roasted on site rather than bought in, and it's built a loyal following for both the coffee itself and, by all accounts, the banana bread. Small, community-feeling and exactly the sort of place a good village High Street needs one of.
West Kent also turned up strongly among the finalists, even where it didn't take the top spot: Fuggles Beer Café and its sister venue Verdigris in Tonbridge were both shortlisted in the Bar category, Essence and The Counter by Robin Read made the Restaurant shortlist for Tunbridge Wells, and Bowleys at The Plough in West Malling was a Restaurant finalist too. And it's worth remembering Sevenoaks already has its own Michelin recognition on the food side - Shwen Shwen's West African-inspired menu earned a Bib Gourmand for 2026, which we
covered in full at the time.
It wasn't just food and drink, either - local businesses picked up Muddy Awards well outside the dining categories too, including Tunbridge Wells's Trinity Theatre, Oak Tree Barn in Tonbridge and Hair by Natalie Blake in Kilndown, a reminder that these awards cover a lot more of local life than what's on the plate. But for anyone planning where to actually eat this autumn, the four above are the places with a trophy - and, in The Small Holding's case, a Michelin star of a different colour - to back it up.
