Hassocks 2-1 Sevenoaks Town
FA Cup Extra Preliminary Qualifying Round | Hassocks Hotel Beacon Ground | Saturday 8th August 2026
Sevenoaks Town: Nathan Jeche (5')
Hassocks: Dan Turner (43' 90+2')
Sevenoaks Town's FA Cup campaign is over before their league season has even begun. The Isthmian League South East side were beaten 2-1 by Southern Combination Premier Division opposition at Hassocks in the Extra Preliminary Qualifying Round — the first time in 20 years Hassocks have knocked out higher-division opposition in the competition.
Sevenoaks made the perfect start. Jed Borders' ball over the top caught the Hassocks defence flat-footed inside five minutes, and Nathan Jeche ran through to rifle a finish past loan goalkeeper Charlie Burns — an 18-year-old only drafted in after regular Hassocks keeper Mitch Bromage was injured in a midweek league defeat to Newhaven. Chances were otherwise scarce until close to the break, when Hassocks levelled through a well-worked set piece: Lewis Finney's free-kick from the left was met by Dan Turner, who lost his marker to power a downward header in off the turf in the 43rd minute.
The game tightened after that, both defences largely on top, and it was still 1-1 deep into second-half stoppage time when the tie turned decisively. Sevenoaks goalkeeper Harry Brooks strayed outside his area to deal with a through ball and appeared to handle it — by most accounts an accidental bobble off his own body rather than a deliberate save — but referee Joshua Plumb reached for a straight red card rather than a yellow, on the grounds it had denied a clear run on goal. Seventeen-year-old Archie Howard, sent on for his senior Sevenoaks debut in the enforced reshuffle, had barely got his gloves on before picking the ball out of his own net: Turner stepped up to the resulting free-kick and blasted it over the wall into the top corner, a strike clean enough to do the rounds on the FA Cup's own social media channels afterwards.
Sevenoaks did have a very late chance to force a midweek replay — Jeche somehow contrived to smash a close-range effort against the crossbar after Hassocks were caught in possession playing out from the back — but no way back materialised. The result sends Hassocks through to the Preliminary Round away to last season's Isthmian South Central runners-up, Westfield, while Sevenoaks' attention now turns fully to the league campaign that actually decides their season.
