Almost 1,400 properties across Cranbrook, Benenden and Rolvenden were left without water or with low pressure from Friday morning, after a burst main in Swattenden Lane, Cranbrook, was compounded by two further bursts in the same area. South East Water said the main was repaired by around 10.45pm on Saturday, but warned that airlocks in the network "will take time to remove" - meaning some households may still see disruption even with the physical repair complete.
The company pointed to a combination of causes rather than a single failure: high demand during the ongoing heatwave, fire service hydrant use during the spate of wildfires that have hit Kent this month, and the repeated main bursts in the same stretch of the network. It's a reminder that the wildfire risk covered elsewhere this week isn't happening in isolation from the strain on other infrastructure - fighting a grass fire draws heavily on the same water network that homes rely on, and a summer with more of one tends to bring more pressure on the other.
For affected households, South East Water kept a bottled water collection point open at The Weald Sports Centre in Cranbrook, and said it would continue delivering bottled water directly to customers still without supply. The company has publicly acknowledged the disruption in blunt terms, saying it "fully acknowledges that this level of service is not acceptable" - an admission that will be cold comfort to residents on their second or third day of interrupted supply, but one that at least signals the company isn't treating repeated bursts in the same area as routine.
The bigger question for Cranbrook and its neighbouring villages is whether this becomes a one-off or another entry in a pattern - West Kent has seen a string of South East Water supply incidents this year, and repeated bursts in the same stretch of pipe are usually a sign of ageing infrastructure rather than bad luck. Residents still experiencing low pressure or no water are advised to check South East Water's website for updates on their specific postcode.
