Brunch in Westerham: A Courtyard Restaurant With a Changing Menu and a Monthly Book Club

Brunch is an independent restaurant in a courtyard off Westerham's Market Square, built around chef Chris Miller's cooking, a menu that changes every few days and a monthly book club that meets on Wednesdays. The next book club is on Wednesday 30 September.

The simple version

Brunch describes itself as "not your usual brunch": chef-led dishes cooked from scratch, with a menu that follows the seasons and, according to its own sample menu page, changes every few days. You can eat in or take away. It is at 7 The Courtyard, Market Square, Westerham, and it is closed on Tuesdays.

Opening hours

Monday, 10am to 4pm. Wednesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, with last food orders at 3pm. Sunday, 10am to 2pm, with last food orders at 1pm. Bank holiday Mondays are 10am to 2pm, but the restaurant asks people to check whether it is opening on bank holidays. Its opening hours page has the current times.

Where the ingredients come from

The restaurant says its meat comes from Whitegate Farm Butchers, its coffee is roasted in Kent by Bean Smitten, and its English wines and drinks come from Balfour Winery, alongside local ingredients across the menu. Its own line on the subject is that "local isn't a marketing exercise": it wants to know where what it cooks comes from and to support other independent businesses. That is the restaurant describing itself, and we haven't checked the supply arrangements independently.

The book club and other events

Brunch runs a monthly book club, always on a Wednesday. Members read that month's book in advance and meet at the restaurant for a 90-minute discussion over coffee or wine. A place costs £5, which secures a seat and supports the running of the club, and tickets are booked online through the restaurant's website. The remaining dates this year are Wednesday 30 September, 28 October, 25 November and 16 December, and the book club page says the yearly reading list mixes fiction, modern classics and conversation-starters. The restaurant also mentions special events and supper clubs on its site, and its Instagram account is @brunchwesterham, which is the place to look for dates as they are announced.

What visitors say

The reviews the restaurant publishes on its own website praise the warm welcome, the friendly service and the courtyard setting, and one suggests booking ahead because it gets busy. Other listings we have seen describe the restaurant as walk-in only, so it is worth phoning on 01959 546960 to check before you set out. Those are testimonials chosen by the restaurant, so read them with that in mind, but they line up with the picture Brunch paints of itself: a place meant to feel a little different each visit.
