Maidstone's Three New Pocket Parks Are Now Open

Update, 22 September: all three pocket parks now open

Maidstone Borough Council has confirmed all three pocket parks are now complete and open to the public, transforming the previously hard-surfaced sites on St Faith's Street, Brewer Street and Union Street into greener spaces. The council says the scheme is part of its wider push to put nature at the heart of decision-making - earlier this year Maidstone became the first council in the UK to formally recognise the Rights of Nature. Cllr Clive English, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Environmental Services and Enforcement, said: "These pocket parks show how even relatively small spaces can make a big difference. They bring nature back into the heart of our town centre, create attractive places for people to spend time and help us adapt to the challenges of climate change." Source: Maidstone Borough Council
Construction began in July on three new pocket parks in Maidstone as part of a project aimed at making the town centre greener, cooler and better prepared for the effects of climate change.
Maidstone Borough Council will create the new green spaces on St Faith's Street, Brewer Street and Union Street, replacing areas of hard paving with trees, plants and sustainable rain gardens.
The project is designed to improve the appearance of the town centre while helping it cope with hotter summers and heavier rainfall. Trees and planting can reduce temperatures in built-up areas by providing shade, while rain gardens allow water to soak naturally into the ground, easing pressure on drainage systems during intense downpours.
Alongside environmental benefits, the council says the pocket parks will create more welcoming public spaces where residents and visitors can stop, relax and enjoy greener surroundings. The additional planting is also expected to support local wildlife by providing habitats and helping pollinators move more easily through the town centre.
To allow the work to be carried out safely, a number of temporary road closures will be introduced. St Faith's Street will be closed between Week Street and Station Road, while smaller closures will also affect parts of Brewer Street and Union Street. The construction programme is expected to last around six weeks.
Councillor Clive English, Deputy Leader of Maidstone Borough Council and Cabinet Member for Environmental Services and Enforcement, said investing in greener public spaces is becoming increasingly important as temperatures rise and extreme weather becomes more common. He acknowledged that the works will cause temporary disruption but said the long-term improvements will benefit residents, businesses and visitors for many years.
The council has apologised in advance for any inconvenience and says it will work with contractors to keep disruption to a minimum while the improvements are completed.
Once finished, the three pocket parks are expected to provide lasting environmental, social and visual benefits in the heart of Maidstone.
