Weston-super-Mare 0-1 Tonbridge Angels

National League South | Optima Stadium | Tuesday 17th March 2026
Tonbridge Angels: E. Sutcliffe (88')
Tonbridge Angels continued their impressive late-season form with a hard-fought and thoroughly deserved 1–0 victory away at Weston-super-Mare, as Ethan Sutcliffe struck late once again to seal all three points.
There was a quiet confidence about the Angels even before kick-off. As the team stepped off the bus on a warm spring evening, they carried a rare mix of calmness and determination. Manager Alan Dunne had given his players freedom-urging them to enjoy the occasion-but this was a group clearly driven by something deeper: pride, unity, and standards they refuse to drop.
From the first whistle, Angels looked sharp and purposeful. Within a minute, Alfie Pavey tested Weston goalkeeper Max Harris, setting the tone for a first half largely controlled by the visitors. Bunmi Babajide and Ricky Korboa both came close during a goalmouth scramble, while Korboa later saw a goalbound effort brilliantly blocked by Tommy Backwell.
Weston, chasing a play-off place, had their moments. A Dan Ellison header drifted narrowly wide, but for the most part, the Angels defence stood firm, with Matt Rowley largely untroubled between the posts.
Angels’ attacking intent remained clear throughout the half. Bailey Akehurst, increasingly influential, fired a left-footed effort just past the post, a warning of what was to come. Despite their dominance, the visitors went into the break level-something that felt slightly unjust given their control of possession and chances created.
The second half settled into a more measured rhythm. Weston enjoyed a brief spell of pressure, forcing Rowley into a smart low save from Scott Bennett on 55 minutes, but clear-cut chances remained limited.
Dunne shuffled his pack, introducing Tom Leahy and Matty Warren to maintain energy and control in midfield. Bradley Williams continued to impress with his physical presence, while Angels remained disciplined and compact at the back.
The game seemed destined for a draw until the closing stages, but this Angels side has developed a habit of delivering when it matters most.
In the 88th minute, Akehurst produced a moment of real quality. His delivery from a right-sided corner was inch perfect just beyond the reach of Harris and invitingly placed for Sutcliffe at the back post. The defender made no mistake, bundling the ball home from close range to spark jubilant celebrations among the travelling supporters.
There was a brief pause as eyes turned to the referee, but the goal stood rightly so and Angels had the breakthrough their performance deserved.
The final minutes were managed with composure and maturity, as Angels saw out the game without alarm to secure another vital away win their first ever at the Optima Stadium.
The victory lifts Tonbridge Angels to 50 points for the season, a tally long identified by Dunne as the benchmark for safety. Yet, if anything, this performance suggested a team with no intention of slowing down.
Speaking after the match, Dunne praised his side’s attitude and resilience: I’m absolutely delighted. This is a really tough place to come because they are a top team. We got it right in all departments-physical, organised, hard to break down.
With the third-best away record in the league and momentum firmly on their side, Angels are showing no signs of heading for the beach just yet.
