Tonbridge Angels' 2026/27 FA Cup campaign starts properly this Saturday, when Ramsgate visit the Yeomans Community Stadium for an all-Kent Second Qualifying Round tie. It's a small step in a competition that has produced some of the biggest days in the club's history - seven appearances at the First Round Proper stage since 1950, spread across two different clubs sharing the same Tonbridge name.
A long history of getting agonisingly close
Tonbridge Football Club - the Angels' predecessor before the original club folded in 1976 - made the First Round Proper three seasons running in the early 1950s, including a 2-2 draw with a Football League Norwich City side in front of 5,657 people, and a club-record 11-1 win over Worthing along the way. A huge crowd of 7,770 turned out when Charlton Athletic visited in 1972/73, a match Charlton won 5-0. In between and after, the club fell at the last qualifying hurdle again and again - eleven times in total, most recently against Chatham Town last season.
The record crowd is more recent than you'd think
Longmead's current attendance record isn't some relic from the club's earlier decades - it was set on 2 November 2024, when 3,132 people packed in to watch the Angels host Harborough Town in the First Round Proper. We checked the figure independently via Football Web Pages' match record, which confirms both the attendance and the result: Harborough won 4-1. It capped a run that had started with home wins over Merstham and Walton & Hersham and an away win at Cray Wanderers - and came only four years after Tonbridge's previous First Round appearance, a behind-closed-doors 7-0 defeat to Bradford City during the 2020 Covid restrictions, played in front of no crowd at all but shown live on national television.
Ramsgate are the visitors this Saturday, 19 September, 3pm kick-off. History says the odds of reaching the First Round Proper from here are long - Tonbridge have needed to win three more qualifying rounds each time they've made it - but as the last two campaigns have shown, a good cup run can still produce a night the town remembers.
