THE PIG Pulls Out of Groombridge Place Project in Shock Move

Plans to transform the historic Groombridge Place estate into a luxury countryside hotel have officially been abandoned after THE PIG Hotel announced it has accepted a private offer for the property. The company bought the Grade I listed estate in early 2023 with plans to turn it into its tenth PIG hotel, a project that had generated huge excitement across West Kent and East Sussex.
In a statement shared online, CEO Kevin Styles described the decision as “one of the hardest” the company has had to make. He said that although the business had received strong support from planning teams and local authorities, the company’s investment focus had changed since first taking on the estate. Styles also described Groombridge Place as “a truly magical place” and said the new owner intends to carefully preserve and invest in the historic property.
The news sparked disappointment among many residents in Tunbridge Wells, Langton Green and surrounding villages who had hoped the project would bring jobs, tourism and more business to the local area. Several people also pointed out that nearby attractions such as the Spa Valley Railway could have benefited from additional visitors staying at the hotel.
While THE PIG Hotels publicly thanked local planning authorities for their support, some commenters still questioned whether planning difficulties may have contributed to the decision behind the scenes. Others focused more on the future of Groombridge Place itself, expressing hope that the new private owner will properly care for the estate and its grounds.
The identity of the buyer has not yet been revealed. Meanwhile, many local supporters are already encouraging THE PIG Hotels to look elsewhere in Kent or East Sussex for a future project, with places such as Bedgebury, Burrswood and Hadlow Manor being suggested online.
Despite the disappointment, THE PIG Hotels confirmed it is continuing to search for new locations around the UK for future developments.
