Sevenoaks keeps centuries-old tradition alive with annual Peppercorn Rent Ceremony

One of Sevenoaks' oldest traditions returned this week as the annual Peppercorn Rent Ceremony took place at The Vine, celebrating more than 250 years of local history, cricket and community.
The ceremony marks a historic agreement dating back to 1773, when The Vine was gifted for public use. Every year, the tradition is honoured through the symbolic exchange of a single peppercorn and a cricket ball, reflecting the long-standing connection between the town, Knole Estate and cricket at The Vine.
This year's ceremony brought together representatives from Sevenoaks Town Council, The Vine Cricket Club and Lord Sackville, continuing a tradition that has been passed down through generations.
The Vine is widely recognised as one of England's oldest cricket grounds, with the annual ceremony serving as a reminder of the unique history that has helped preserve the ground for community cricket for more than two centuries.
Although the exchange itself lasts only a few moments, it represents an agreement that has remained part of Sevenoaks' heritage since the 18th century and continues to be celebrated each year.
Sevenoaks Town Council says the ceremony reflects the town's rich history while recognising the important role The Vine continues to play as both a sporting venue and a valued public green space.
The event will go ahead regardless of the weather, so organisers recommend bringing warm clothing for later in the evening. Visitors should note that only assistance dogs are permitted, and umbrellas or gazebos will not be allowed to ensure everyone has a clear view of the screen.
Booking is essential.
