Progress on Rose and Crown restoration as owners commit to repairs

The long-awaited restoration of the historic Rose and Crown Hotel in Tonbridge has taken a step forward after the building's owners confirmed they will take back direct control of the property and move ahead with renovation plans.
Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council has been working with the owners over concerns about the condition of the Grade II listed building, which has shown increasing signs of deterioration in recent years.
According to the council, the owners have now ended the previous leasing arrangement and intend to manage the hotel themselves. They have also confirmed their plans to restore the building and preserve its future as a hotel, with council officers offering advice throughout the process.
Earlier this year, the owners commissioned a structural survey, which led to some repair work being carried out in May. However, the council says a number of important issues still need attention. These include repairs to the flat roof above the entrance columns and restoration of the decorative shield and coat of arms highlighted in a listed building enforcement notice.
A further inspection took place in July involving the owners and council planning enforcement officers. During the visit, additional areas requiring attention were identified. The owners will now carry out more detailed structural surveys of the portico, carriageway and part of the restaurant to assess the extent of rainwater damage before further repair work begins.
Councillor Adem Mehmet, Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Tonbridge Regeneration, welcomed the owners' renewed commitment but stressed that the repairs must now be completed without unnecessary delay. He also warned that the council has not ruled out further enforcement action if sufficient progress is not made.
The Rose and Crown is one of Tonbridge High Street's best-known historic buildings and, as a Grade II listed property, is legally protected because of its architectural and historical significance.
