Off-duty police staff praised for helping distressed children in Maidstone

Off-duty staff from Kent Police have been formally commended after stepping in to help two distressed children in Maidstone.
The incident took place while the staff members were not on duty, yet they acted quickly after becoming concerned about the welfare of the children, who were found upset and in need of assistance. Recognising the situation as a safeguarding matter, they stayed with the children, offered reassurance, and ensured the appropriate support was put in place.
Their actions helped to keep the children safe until on-duty officers and partner agencies could take over. Police have since confirmed that the situation was resolved with the children’s welfare prioritised throughout.
Senior officers praised the off-duty staff for their professionalism and instincts, highlighting that safeguarding is a responsibility that extends beyond working hours. The commendation recognises not only their decisive response, but also the calm and compassionate way they handled a sensitive situation.
Kent Police has used the incident to underline the importance of public vigilance and early intervention when concerns are raised about vulnerable young people. Members of the public are encouraged to report worries about a child’s safety, trusting that support services can step in when needed.
The force said the actions of the off-duty staff reflect the values of policing by consent and a continued commitment to protecting children and young people across the county.
