Plans have been submitted that could see home furnishings retailer Dunelm open a new store at Fountains Retail Park in Royal Tunbridge Wells.
The application, submitted on behalf of Marks & Spencer Plc, proposes alterations to the recently created Unit 4B, allowing it to be occupied by Dunelm. The proposals will now be considered by Tunbridge Wells Borough Council as part of the planning process.
According to the planning documents, the application includes an extension to the existing mezzanine floor, creating a total retail floorspace of approximately 4,303 square metres (46,300 sq ft). The plans also include an ancillary café within the store.
The documents explain that Unit 4B was created after the former Marks & Spencer store at Fountains Retail Park was divided into two units. Unit 4A continues to operate as the M&S Foodhall, while Unit 4B has been prepared for a new retailer.
Planning consultants acting on behalf of the applicant say the additional mezzanine space is needed to support the operational requirements of the proposed store. They also conclude that the development would not have a significant impact on nearby town centres and is in line with local and national planning policies.
Architectural drawings submitted with the application identify the proposed occupier as Dunelm and show the planned retail layout, mezzanine extension and café area.
At this stage, the proposals are subject to approval, and Tunbridge Wells Borough Council has not yet issued a decision on the application.
Residents wishing to view the plans can do so via the council's planning portal.
