Maidstone United 1-2 Farnborough
National League South | Gallagher Stadium | Saturday 8th August 2026
Maidstone United: Ken Charles (68')
Farnborough: Mason Bloomfield (45+2') Michael Reindorf (48')
Maidstone United will feel this was a game that slipped away from them at the worst possible moments, rather than one where they were comprehensively outplayed. The Stones started the brighter of the two sides, but it was Farnborough who fashioned the more clear-cut opportunities as the first half wore on, with Lenny Holden required to make a string of important saves to keep the scores level.
The visitors' pressure told just before the interval. Two minutes into stoppage time, Sam Barratt's cross from the right found the unmarked Mason Bloomfield, who headed home to give Farnborough a lead that, on the balance of chances created, was not undeserved. It was a cruel time to concede for Maidstone, who had shown enough in the final third to suggest they could cause problems of their own, not least through Leone Gravata's early run into the box.
Whatever momentum Maidstone had built before the break was undone almost immediately after it. Farnborough doubled their advantage within moments of the restart when Sam Okoye played the ball into Michael Reindorf, who calmly stroked it into the middle of the goal. Two goals down inside a couple of minutes either side of half-time is a difficult position for any side to recover from, and it set Maidstone a steep task for the remainder of the match.
To their credit, the Stones did not fold. On 68 minutes they found a way back into the contest, though not without cost — substitute Nana Boateng was brought down to win the free-kick that led to the goal, only for it to be his last involvement of the match as he was replaced by Jayden Davis. Riley Court's resulting delivery was headed down by Frankie Hvid, and Ken Charles reacted quickest to poke the ball over the line.
That goal set up a tense finish, and Maidstone came close to completing the turnaround. Hvid met a Court corner only to see Lucas Thomas scoop the ball clear from almost on the line, and moments later Davis was denied by another fine save from the Farnborough goalkeeper. Deep into stoppage time, Gravata was fouled just outside the box by Barratt, and Court's resulting free-kick looked destined for the top corner until Thomas produced a smart save to turn it behind for a corner.
It finished 2-1 to Farnborough, a result that will sting given how close Maidstone came to salvaging a point in the closing stages. For a squad still finding its feet and shape early in the season, games like this — where fine margins either side of the interval decide the outcome — are the kind that tend to even out over a longer campaign, provided the underlying performance level holds up. The concern for Maidstone will be the pattern of conceding at moments of transition, just before and just after half-time, which is the sort of lapse that can be coached out but needs addressing before it becomes habitual.
