Most visitors to Knole never see beyond the house and deer park - but on Friday 16 October, Lord Sackville's private garden opens its gates to the public for what's currently listed as its last open day of the year.
26 acres, still a private garden
Unlike the rest of the Knole estate, the garden is not run by the National Trust's own gardening team - it remains privately tended by Lord Sackville's gardeners, which is why it stays closed outside these special event days. Inside the walls are sprawling lawns, a walled garden, an untamed wilderness area and a medieval orchard, with views back across to the house. The National Trust notes that, because it's a private garden, seating is limited and plants aren't labelled - it's a garden to wander rather than a formally interpreted visitor attraction.
The garden is open from 11am to 4pm, with tickets £5 for adults and £2.50 for children aged 5-17 (under-5s free) on top of normal Knole admission - National Trust members get free admission to Knole itself but still need a garden ticket. Booking is advisable, either online or by phone on 0344 249 1895, as tickets are subject to availability. Assistance dogs are welcome, but picnics aren't permitted inside the garden. Source:
