National League South | Hornchurch Stadium | Saturday 14th February 2026 | Attendance: 717
Hornchurch: H. Gibbs (36') H. Sandat (45') A. Balanta (93')
Tonbridge Angels: T. Leahy (60') J. Thompson (68')
For the second time in a week, Tonbridge Angels were left stunned by a stoppage-time goal, as Hornchurch snatched a dramatic 3–2 victory in front of 717 spectators on a bright afternoon in Essex.
Fast Start from Angels
The visitors began with intent and confidence, forcing early corners and testing the Hornchurch defence with long-range efforts. Their positive approach paid off inside six minutes when Tom Leahy opened the scoring, giving Angels a deserved early lead.
Tonbridge continued to press, with Kyle Smith calling Hornchurch goalkeeper Arthur Nasta into action soon after. At that stage, the Angels looked firmly in control.
Hornchurch Fight Back
The early setback appeared to spark the hosts into life. Josh Rees forced Laurie Shala into action, before further efforts from Harry Gibbs and Rees demanded impressive saves from the Angels’ goalkeeper.
Hornchurch found their equaliser in the 38th minute through Gibbs, though the goal proved controversial, with many Tonbridge supporters adamant the ball had not fully crossed the line.
The hosts carried their momentum into first-half stoppage time when Harry Sandat was brought down in the penalty area. Sandat converted the spot-kick himself, turning the game on its head before the break.
Thompson Levels as Angels Push On
Tonbridge responded strongly after half-time. Alfie Pavey tested Nasta early in the second period, and manager Alan Dunne introduced Matt Warren and Frankie Baker to inject fresh energy.
Baker came close with a near-range effort, and the mounting pressure finally told in the 70th minute. Captain Jordon Thompson fired home emphatically from inside the penalty area to restore parity at 2–2.
With momentum on their side, Angels pushed hard for a winner. Leahy, Baker and Bailey Akehurst all went close in the closing stages as the visitors sought what would have been a deserved three points.
Added-Time Agony
Instead, it was heartbreak once more. Deep into added time, Angelo Balanta struck in the 93rd minute to secure all three points for Hornchurch, denying Tonbridge what would have been a hard-earned draw.
It was a cruel ending for the Angels, who matched their opponents throughout and will feel unfortunate to leave Essex empty-handed.
