A familiar retailer has disappeared from one of Tonbridge's busiest shopping destinations after the Halfords store on Cannon Lane permanently closed its doors.
For many local residents, the branch had become a regular stop for everything from car accessories and replacement bulbs to bicycles, servicing and repairs. Its closure marks the end of more than a decade at the retail park and leaves one of the area's largest retail units vacant.
A convenient location for local shoppers
The Cannon Lane retail park remains one of Tonbridge's most popular places to shop. Alongside Halfords, it is home to Marks & Spencer Foodhall, Costa Coffee, Home Bargains, The Food Warehouse, a pharmacy, a pet shop with grooming services and several other businesses.
With a large free car park and a variety of well-known retailers in one place, many residents regularly combined several errands into a single visit. For some, picking up groceries, grabbing a coffee and calling into Halfords for car or cycling essentials had become part of their normal routine.
The closure means shoppers looking for many motoring and cycling products, as well as some servicing, will now have to travel to other nearby locations.
Residents react to the closure
The news has sparked plenty of discussion among local residents, with many expressing disappointment at losing another well-known retailer from the town.
Some described Halfords as a useful store they had relied on for years, while others said they would miss the convenience of having a branch so close to home. As is often the case when a prominent retail unit becomes vacant, there has also been plenty of speculation about what business could eventually move into the site.
At the moment, however, there has been no official announcement about the future of the building.
What could come next?
Although the closure is disappointing for many shoppers, the site remains in a highly visible location with excellent access and a steady flow of customers visiting the retail park every day.
Large retail units in Tonbridge do not become available very often, making it likely that the property will attract interest from other businesses looking to establish themselves in the area.
For now, the former Halfords building stands empty, bringing an end to a long-standing presence on Cannon Lane.
