Sevenoaks Town Football Club has a new home. Greatness Football & Community Centre, the club's new clubhouse at Greatness Recreation Ground, was officially opened on Friday 18 September by the Mayor of Sevenoaks, Cllr Victoria Granville, and Sevenoaks Town FC chairman Paul Lansdale.
More than a changing room
The building was funded with more than £2 million from the Premier League, the FA and the Government's Football Foundation, the Premier League Stadium Fund, Sevenoaks District Council's Community Infrastructure Levy, the club itself and Sevenoaks Town Council, which owns the recreation ground and partnered with the club to deliver the project. Inside, it has changing rooms, a gym area, a kitchen and a café/refreshment space intended to serve players and the wider community, not just matchday crowds.
A green building, not just a new one
The centre is also a showcase for the council's Green Community Investment Plan: an air source heat pump and solar panels handle heating and power, and a living green wall - visible from outside - is meant to improve the building's environmental performance and cut its long-term carbon footprint. The council says the project was finished on schedule.
Cllr Granville said the club and the wider Sevenoaks community had "eagerly awaited the completion of this outstanding facility," while Lansdale called the opening "an incredibly proud moment... which would simply not have been possible without the close partnership we have built with Sevenoaks Town Council." It isn't the end of the work at Greatness: the council says a new playground, outdoor gym and landscaping are planned for the site this autumn, extending the wider redevelopment of the recreation ground beyond just the football club's own facilities.
