Maidstone United: J. Gilbert (72')
A second-half strike from John Gilbert proved decisive as Maidstone United secured a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Farnborough at the Gallagher Stadium on Saturday. Gilbert’s goal in the 72nd minute – his ninth of the season - ensured the Stones recorded their second consecutive home win.
Quiet First Half With Few Chances
The opening period was largely short on clear opportunities. Maidstone suffered an early setback when captain Sam Corne was forced off injured after 18 minutes, with Jamie Yila coming on as his replacement.
The best moment of the half came in the 37th minute when a Maidstone corner created chaos inside the Farnborough penalty area. Hamzad Kargbo met the delivery and the ball struck Ollie Robinson, but Renny Smith reacted quickly to head the ball off the line and prevent the Stones from taking the lead.
Moments later, Maidstone threatened again. Kargbo threaded a clever pass to TJ Bramble, who drove into the box but could only fire over the bar from a tight angle. Just before the break, Kargbo had another opportunity but sliced a volley high and wide.
Farnborough Hit the Bar
The visitors came close early in the second half. A handball by Boyd Beacroft just outside the penalty area handed Farnborough a free kick, and Riley Court’s curling effort struck the crossbar.
Maidstone gradually began to apply more pressure. Jephte Tanga set up Gilbert near the edge of the area, but the forward’s effort sailed over. Shortly afterwards, a long throw from David Agbontohoma caused problems in the Farnborough box, with Kargbo getting a shot away before goalkeeper Joe Duncan made an important block.
Gilbert Breaks the Deadlock
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 72nd minute. A well-weighted long pass from Leo Hamblin released Gilbert behind the Farnborough defence. The striker calmly rounded Duncan before lifting the ball into the far corner to give Maidstone the lead.
The goal lifted the home side and they continued to push forward. Substitute Christie Pattisson, making his return to the club, linked up with George Fowler, whose cross was headed wide by Taylor Foran.
Pattisson himself had two chances to double the lead - one fierce shot just past the post and another effort that flew over the bar after Duncan spilled a cross under pressure.
Late Pressure From Farnborough
Farnborough nearly snatched an equaliser late on. Rakish Bingham headed narrowly wide from Toby Bower’s cross on 85 minutes, before Maidstone were forced into a last-ditch clearance in stoppage time when Taylor Foran hacked away Beacroft’s low drive from inside the six-yard box.
Despite the late pressure, Maidstone held firm to secure an important three points in front of their home supporters.
