A dangerous driver has been jailed after a police pursuit through Sevenoaks ended in a head-on collision on the A25 Westerham Road.
William Hutchings, 31, of Boughton Avenue in Bromley, London, was sentenced to 16 months in prison at Maidstone Crown Court on 4 June 2026 after pleading guilty to dangerous driving.
The incident happened at around 8.15pm on 19 April 2025, when officers travelling along London Road towards Amherst Hill saw a silver Ford Fiesta carry out a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre. Police indicated for the vehicle to stop, but Hutchings continued driving and a pursuit followed.
According to Kent Police, Hutchings drove at excessive speed, using hatched markings and travelling on the wrong side of the road. The pursuit ended on the A25 Westerham Road near Sevenoaks, where the Ford Fiesta collided head-on with a black Land Rover Defender.
The occupants of the Land Rover suffered minor injuries. Hutchings was seriously injured in the crash and officers gave life-saving first aid at the scene until paramedics arrived. He later spent a lengthy period in hospital before being interviewed and charged.
After his release from prison, Hutchings will be banned from driving for five years and six months. He will also have to pass an extended driving test before being allowed back on the road.
Detective Constable Vikki Steward said Hutchings had shown “zero regard for other road users” and described his driving as reckless and dangerous through a quiet residential area.
Chief Inspector Craig West, Head of Kent Police’s Roads Policing Unit, said speeding remains one of the four “fatal factors” that contribute to deaths and serious injuries on Kent’s roads, alongside not wearing a seatbelt, drink or drug driving, and using a mobile phone or other device at the wheel.
Kent Police said the case should serve as a reminder to motorists to stick to speed limits and protect other road users.
