Lamberhurst's Chequers Inn Reassures Customers After Going Public With Energy Supplier Dispute

The Chequers Inn, a 15th-century pub on The Broadway in Lamberhurst, has gone public with a dispute against its electricity supplier, Yorkshire Gas & Power - and used its own Facebook page and website to reassure customers it has no intention of closing.

"The lights are still on"

Landlords Rich and Becky posted the same message on both the pub's Facebook page and its own website: "Thank you for all your lovely support after we went public about our treatment by Yorkshire Gas & Power. There's an ongoing investigation but we want to reassure our customers that we are very much still open, and have no intention of closing! See you soon for a warm welcome. The lights are still on! Rich & Becky x" Neither post gives further detail on the size of the disputed bill or who is investigating it, and the pub had not published anything further at the time of writing.

A registered community asset

The Chequers Inn is on Tunbridge Wells Borough Council's current list of Assets of Community Value, alongside other West Kent pubs including the Elephants Head, the Queens Head and the Bull - a status that gives the local community a right to bid if the pub is ever put up for sale. It's also a Grade II listed building, with parts dating back to the 1500s.

What we don't know

Beyond the pub's own statement, we haven't been able to independently verify the specifics of the billing dispute - the amount involved, what Yorkshire Gas & Power has said, or the status of any ombudsman investigation - so we're not reporting figures at this stage. We'll follow up if the Chequers Inn or Yorkshire Gas & Power publish more detail.
