Carvalho strikes late to rescue dramatic point

Chelmsford City 1-1 Maidstone United

National League South | EMG Inspire Stadium | Monday 16th February 2026
Chelmsford City: L. Taylor (59')
Maidstone United: R. Carvalho (95')
Maidstone United left it late once again in the National League South – but this time there was relief rather than heartbreak as Ruben Carvalho struck deep into stoppage time to earn a 1–1 draw away at Chelmsford City.
On a cool Monday evening at the EMG Inspire Stadium, there was little to separate the sides early on. Chelmsford gradually began to assert themselves as the first half wore on, creating a series of half chances without finding the breakthrough.
Joe Grimwood headed narrowly over from a Jason Adigun corner on the half-hour mark, before Jett Murphy glanced a header wide after Sonnie Davis delivered from the flank. Adigun himself tried his luck from distance, but his rising effort cleared the crossbar.
Just before the interval, Lyle Taylor’s low ball into the box found Harry Barbrook, whose strike was well blocked by the Maidstone defence to keep the scores level at the break.
After the restart, the pattern continued. Adigun again threatened, while Maidstone goalkeeper Nathan Harness was called into action to tip a fierce Ricky Holmes effort over the bar. But on 59 minutes, the deadlock was finally broken.
Murphy combined neatly with Adigun, who weaved his way into the area before picking out Taylor. The Chelmsford forward made no mistake from close range, firing the hosts into a deserved lead.
Both managers turned to their benches as the contest edged towards its conclusion. Jamie Odegah went close for the hosts after getting in behind the Stones’ defence, but Harness stood firm.
Just as it seemed Maidstone would be left frustrated again, the visitors produced a dramatic finale five minutes into added time. TJ Bramble drove forward before linking with Jamie Yila, who fed Muhammadu Faal on the right. Faal’s low cross caused chaos in the six-yard box, Deon Moore applied a crucial touch, and substitute Ruben Carvalho reacted quickest to smash home from close range.
The late equaliser sparked celebrations among the travelling supporters and ensured the Stones returned to Kent with a valuable point.
