Angels Open Season with Emphatic Win at Braintree

Braintree Town 0-4 Tonbridge Angels

National League South | Amlin Stadium | Saturday 8th August 2026 | Attendance: 543
Tonbridge Angels: Lamar Reynolds (14') Jephte Tanga (35' 51') Frankie Baker (90+6')
Tonbridge Angels could hardly have asked for a better start to the new season. A trip to Essex to face Braintree Town ended in a 4-0 victory, with goals from Jephte Tanga (2), Lamar Reynolds and Frankie Baker giving Alan Dunne's side a comprehensive win and a clean sheet on the road. For a club looking to build momentum from the off, this is about as strong a statement as could be made in a season opener.
What stands out from the account of the match is less the scoreline and more the manner in which Dunne set the tone before a ball was even kicked. His pre-match address to players and staff, described as drawing on his own upbringing on a North London council estate, was built around asking each player what qualities they would bring to the season ahead — passion, commitment, dependability, but also courage, leadership and standards. It is the kind of exercise many clubs talk about doing at the start of a campaign; the test, as ever, is whether it translates onto the pitch. On this evidence, at Braintree at least, it did.
Dunne handed full debuts to eight players and fielded a reshaped 4-3-3, including loan midfield signing Hayden Bullas. With regular captain Sam Corne and vice-captain Jordon Thompson both missing, the armband went to centre-back Lexus Beeden — one of several changes that suggest Dunne is prepared to rotate personnel and responsibility early in the season rather than relying on a settled core from the outset.
The football itself followed a familiar pattern for a strong away performance: a bright home team early on, then a shift in control once the visitors found their rhythm. Reynolds opened the scoring after quarter of an hour, converting a chance created by Harry Gardner, before Tanga's looping header — reportedly only the second of his career — doubled the lead before half-time. Gardner's introduction of width and energy in the first half, followed by the introduction of substitute Bunmi Babajide at the break, appears to have been central to Angels pulling away in the second period, with Tanga and later Baker adding further goals.
For West Kent followers of non-league football, results like this matter beyond the three points. A first match of the season is often used as a marker for how far pre-season work has translated into on-pitch structure, and Dunne was keen to stress after the game that his focus was as much on process as on the result. He told Angels Media he had seen "evidence of a lot of the things we've been working on during pre-season in terms of shape, discipline and game-management," while cautioning against reading too much into a single fixture: "It's only one game and I can't judge things on that."
There is also a subplot worth watching over the coming weeks: Dunne's public concerns about the state of the Braintree pitch, which he considered too dangerous to play on, dry, uneven and unsafe by his description. He raised this with match officials before kick-off and reiterated it afterwards, noting that getting through the game without injury was as pleasing to him as the four goals. Pitch conditions early in the season are not unusual at this level, particularly after a dry summer, but it is a reminder that results can sometimes mask underlying player welfare concerns that clubs and leagues may need to address as the campaign develops.
With a first league win banked and a settled goalscoring pattern already emerging — five different players involved directly in the four goals, including two substitutes contributing assists — Angels fans will hope this is a platform rather than a one-off. As Dunne himself acknowledged, one match tells only part of the story; the coming weeks will show whether the shape and discipline on display in Essex can be sustained against tougher opposition.
