Good news for families across Maidstone. Nineteen parish councils have each received £5,000 in funding from Maidstone Borough Council to help improve and maintain local play areas, creating safer and more attractive spaces for children to enjoy.
The £95,000 scheme, delivered through the council's Parks and Open Spaces team, aims to support parishes in keeping these important community facilities in good condition for years to come.
The first parish to complete its improvements was Barming, where the funding helped pay for new railings and signage at the South Street Play Area. The project also attracted additional support from other organisations, allowing even more improvements to go ahead.
As a parent, I know how valuable these play areas can be. When my children were younger, local playgrounds were a regular part of our routine. They were places where children could run, climb, explore and simply burn off energy outdoors instead of sitting in front of screens. They were also places where parents could meet other families and build connections within the community.
In an age where many children spend increasing amounts of time indoors, investments like this matter. A well-maintained playground is much more than a few swings and slides. It provides opportunities for physical activity, social interaction and imaginative play, all of which are important for healthy childhood development.
It's encouraging to see local councils investing in facilities that directly benefit families and communities. While £5,000 may not sound like a huge amount, small improvements can make a big difference when it comes to safety, accessibility and the overall appearance of these spaces.
